Yesterday in studio we presented what we had done in our 48-hour charrette. My group worked on the new third site, or the old motels along Fremont Street. Although this experience was helpful, it was difficult to feel a part of the group. This had nothing to do with my teammates but with the fact that I was gone from class the day the groups were made so I had no connection to the site prior to designing it.
That being said, I think our group proposed strong ideas for what could happen to the site. We wanted to create different housing options to allow more people to stay in this area. By repurposing the existing buildings on the site, it would keep the character the old buildings have while creating a new feel with the new buildings on site. Creating places for people to mix and collaborate will allow for opportunities of new ideas to be sparked.
One thing I did find difficult with this project was to determine how much detail to go into. The alleyways would be designed and developed more but at this time, we weren’t sure what would happen there, what elements would be a part of it, and what vegetation would be included. After looking at other presentations, we could have gone into more detail and I know this going forward.
Moving forward, I am joining the Downtown South group. This site was originally what I wanted to do while we were in Las Vegas. This size of site is different than projects I have worked on in the past and I think it will be a great opportunity to collaborate with students with different majors on a project of this scale. I think what they are proposing makes sense for the site and will bring people back to this site.
